[O]n Saturday March 10th Australian cellist Jack Bailey will be joining the Westmorland Orchestra for a performance of Dvorak’s remarkable Cello Concerto.
Mr Bailey is an award-winning young musician who has played with top orchestras and performed around the world. He is currently studying at the Royal Northern College of Music with Professor Hannah Roberts – who has performed regularly in Cumbria with the Manchester Camerata. He says “”I am most looking forward to visiting the beautiful Lake District for the first time and performing this wonderful work with the Westmorland Orchestra!”
The orchestra will also be performing Mozart’s energetic Overture to The Magic Flute and the ever-popular Enigma Variations by English Composer Edward Elgar.
The orchestra’s conductor, Richard Howarth says “It may seem a curious mix of musical styles but it really works as a concert programme. The very talented young cellist Jack Bailey will play one of the most popular concertos for the instrument. The orchestra is in fine fettle and enjoying rehearsals. And what a joy to play Mozart!”
Mr Howarth brings a wealth of experience and energy to orchestral conducting. He has conducted Manchester Camerata, the Ulster Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the London, Scottish and Manchester Concert Orchestras and, from the violin, has directed Manchester Camerata and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
Pam Redman, who left her job as a GP to pursue a career in music, leads the orchestra and says “I am very proud of the Westmorland Orchestra. Not only does it offer musicians the opportunity to enjoy playing wonderful music to a very high standard but we are able to perform for audiences who pay a small ticket fee to cover costs – and even better, tickets are free to those 18 and under!”
The Westmorland Orchestra is in its 73rd season and is made up of dedicated and talented amateur players and professional musicians from across Cumbria and Lancashire. It is always looking for new musicians.
The concert at Westmorland Hall (Kendal Leisure Centre) starts at 7.30 pm on 10th March. Tickets are £12 for adults and free for those aged 18 and under available from The Brewery Arts Centre Tel:01539 725 133 and will be available on the door on the night.
