County council care home staff pull together during wintery weather

[S]taff from Moot Lodge Care Home in Brampton are working extra shifts to cover for colleagues who can’t make it into work due to the bad weather.

The Cumbria County Council run home currently has 12 residents and employs care workers who live as far away as Newcastleton and Langholm. Fortunately, a number of staff members live more locally and have been able to step in and provide cover to keep the home adequately staffed.

Helen Harrison is the Manager for Moot Lodge and travels in from Burgh-by-Sands but allowing extra time for her journey has managed to make it into work the past two days without any difficulty.

For many of the residents snowy scenes like this is nothing new. Bob who is 83 years old remembers winters as a boy when the snow came up to his chest, although he did say that he hasn’t seen it like this for a good few years and is very happy to be indoors watching the snowflakes from his window!

86 year old Jane is not a big fan of winter. She even moved to Africa in her younger years to escape the bad weather of England! Like Bob, she loves watching people outside having fun in the snow, but is very pleased to be wrapped up warm chatting with her friends.

Karen Armstrong is a Supervisor at Moot Lodge, she said:

“I just live around the corner from Moot Lodge so the weather hasn’t caused me any problems. I’ve worked here for 20 years and we’re more like a family. We muck in and help each other out whenever we need to so that we’ve got enough people in to care for the residents. We’ve got plans in place for the next few days and over the weekend in case the weather doesn’t improve.”
