[S]tudents and staff at Penrith’s Queen Elizabeth Grammar School have celebrated World Book Day – a week late.
In common with most local schools, QEGS was closed on World Book Day – Thursday 1st March – because of the snow. But rather than miss out on all the fun, the school celebrated a week later.
Staff and pupils rose to the occasion, with many dressing up as a favourite literary character. Skulduggery Pleasant, Peter Rabbit and the Mad Hatter were amongst the characters spotted around school, with the four members of the history department dressing as Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy from The Chronicles of Narnia.
Prizes were on offer for correctly identifying staff members from photos of them holding a favourite book in front of their faces, and for the best decorated classroom door.
Even the school’s lunch menu had a literary theme; dishes on offer in the canteen included Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Three Little Pigs’ Sausage & Mash.
A selection of the books published for World Book Day was on offer in the school library for students to exchange for their £1 World Book Day vouchers.
Librarian, Mrs Vicky Marshall, who dressed as the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland for the day, said: “Reading for pleasure can be so much fun and it’s good for you – numerous studies have showed the benefits of reading for mental health, for academic achievement and for general wellbeing. World Book Day is all about encouraging our students to read for sheer enjoyment and we’ve certainly had a lot of fun with books today.”
