St Benedict’s Year 7 Rugby Team Celebrating their win in the County Cup Final

[T]he Year 7 Boys’ Rugby team from St Benedict’s have finished an impressive season by winning the County Cup Final.

In a close competitive game, played at the Recreation Ground, St Benedict’s ended their season with a victory over arch rivals Dowdales School, from Dalton-in-Furness.

Straight from the kick off, both sides displayed an open brand of rugby, resulting in end to end play. But it was St Benedict’s who opened the scoring, when loose forward Fletcher Holgate scored a try wide out, with half back Harley Nelson missing the conversion.

Ten minutes in and St Benedict’s scored again when second rower Miller Dalton crashed over near the posts. This time Nelson converted to make the score 10 – 0.

The last ten minutes of the half, Dowdales struck back scoring two tries and converting one. This left the score at half time at 10 -10.

The second half turned to be a carbon copy of the first, with St Benedict’s dominating much of the play. This resulted in man of the match Harley Nelson stepping his way through the Dowdales defence to score a try underneath the posts, which he duly converted.

Shortly after, Miller Dalton scored his second try, Nelson missing the conversion. The score was now 20-10.

In the final minutes of the half, Dowdales threw everything at the St Benedict’s defence, and with only three minutes to go, they scored out wide. This was converted to bring the score to 20-16.

In the remaining time the St Benedict’s defence held, to get a deserved victory.
