Danger driver who led police on prolonged Carlisle pursuit is jailed

[A] MOTORING menace who caused four crashes and tried to ram a patrol car during a lengthy Carlisle police chase has been jailed.

Banned driver Mark Young reached 50-60mph on densely populated residential roads during a prolonged daytime pursuit in the Easter holidays on April 11.

Young forced a PC to leap out of the way as he drove towards his vehicle in a stolen Vauxhall Corsa. The officer later concluded that had he not done so, he might have been killed or seriously injured.

Carlisle Crown Court heard the 20-year-old – a dangerous driver on three previous occasions – even stopped to change a tyre after damaging the offending vehicle in one collision. He was said to have been “intoxicated” during an incident he later confessed to having no memory of.

Young, of Bower Street, Carlisle was sentenced at the crown court today (FRI) having admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and handling stolen goods.

He was jailed for two years, banned from driving for two years upon release and must take an extended test.

Judge James Adkin described Young’s driving as “extraordinary”, telling him: “The potential harm to members of the public was vast by virtue of the way that you drove.”
