Young girls in Cumberland take first steps into football

[O]ver 100 female players aged seven and eight have enjoyed Cumberland FA’s Girls’ Under-8 Summer Festival Programme this year, with six of the County FA’s Charter Standard clubs getting involved by hosting their own events.

The festivals, which moved around the county to enable all clubs in Cumberland to play, began at Penrith AFC in May and concluded at Gillford Park JFC on Saturday 14 July.

The programme may have ended at the weekend, but Cumberland FA is now working with its affiliated leagues and clubs to support the ever-growing football opportunities for young girls in the east and west of the county.

Jess Nelson, Football Development Officer at Cumberland FA, said: “I’ve been really impressed with the response from our Under-8 programme this summer. The clubs who stepped forward to deliver events have been fantastic and helped to create perfect environments for teams taking their first steps into girls’ football.

“We look forward to launching the programme again next spring and working specifically with our Under-7 age group.”

If you’re interested in hosting your own festival next spring, please keep an eye on www.CumberlandFA.com for updates later this year.
