Glasson Rangers are showing signs of finding their feet after a particularly tough period in their proud history.
In 2024 they had to pull out of the Cumberland ARL very early in the season.
They came back last year but suffered a number of heavy defeats but battled through to complete the season.
They’ve had a tough start this time round, largely because of a lack of continuity in their early season fixtures.
But numbers are up, they have won their last two games against Dalton A and Maryport A and are looking forward to tomorrow’s trip to Cumbria Men’s League Division One leaders Aspatria Hornets.
Chris Broadley, a former Askam player and coach moved up to Maryport this season and is pleased with how things are improving.
He coaches the team alongside Matthew and Scott Burns, a family synonymous with Glasson rugby over the years.
Chris chatted with Cumbria Crack’s John Walsh about all things Glasson and you can hear their conversation below:
It’s going to be a special day, too, at Aspatria as the Hornets will be raising funds in aid of the Eden Valley Hospice and the Jigsaw Children’s Hospice.
The Aspatria players have bought a special match shirt and the club has sold over 120 commemorative shorts.
The day is being staged in memory of Andrea Bell, a lady from Westnewton who died from her second bout of cancer nine months ago.
She was related to the former Aspatria player and committee man David Abram.
The Hornets will go into the game on the back of their first defeat in Division One, going down to a converted try at Egremont, scored three minutes from the end.
Egremont A will hope to follow up when they get the weekend under way with a trip to Maryport A tonight.
The other game in Division One tomorrow sees Dalton A host Millom A in a South Cumbrian derby.
As for the Cumbria Men’s League Premier Division the programme also kicks off tonight with Askam v Cockermouth Titans.
Playing tomorrow are Lowca v Roose Pioneers and Wath Brow A v Flimby Vikings.
Some tasty games should light up the Cumbria Conference.
Probably top of the bill will be Hensingham at home to Barrow Island and another game in the south of the county Millom v Maryport.
It will be interesting to see how Distington fare at leaders Dalton as the West Cumbrians have been punching above their weight and made a decent fist of it in the home game with the 100% opposition.
Two of the strugglers in the south of the county Ulverston and Hindpool Tigers meet while there’s an all-Allerdale clash Ellenborough v Seaton.
In the National League the Premier Division clash between York Acorns and Wath Brow Hornets has been put back until August 1 by agreement between the two clubs.
In Division One there is plenty of interest in the game at Gillfoot where Egremont Rangers host the League leaders Dewsbury Celtic.
The Celtic went top after their win last week while previous leaders Kells were going down in Dewsbury to the Moor Maroons.
Kells will be looking to make amends tomorrow when they play at home to Leigh Miners Rangers, who will be better than their position of fourth bottom indicates.
