[C]umbria Police have received reports from members of the public who have received calls from people purporting to be from HMRC, telling the person called that they owe money.
This is a scam also reported in other areas of the country.
A Cumbria Police spokesman said: “There have also been reports of follow up calls from people pretending to be the police – sometimes the Met – telling the person called that there is a warrant out and they will be arrested unless they pay.
“This is a scam and we would urge people not to give out any private information over the phone including bank details.
“We would also ask people to make family members aware – particularly elderly relatives.”
