A ‘Neat Streets’ campaign is underway in Carlisle and local residents are being encouraged to lend a hand.
The Carlisle City Council initiative is targeting back lanes and aims to get them free of fly-tipping and litter. Some lanes have recently been cleaned and this is the next stage of getting the community involved and taking responsibility of the lanes.
Letters have been hand delivered to residents whose properties are connected to the back lanes. They are being asked to support the campaign by keeping the lanes clear of dumped items and pass on any information that allows the City Council to prosecute those who fly-tip and litter. The City Council will also be contacting residents who have previously expressed an interest in helping them make a difference and Keep Carlisle Clean.
A community event is planned this Saturday (29 September) at 10am in the back lane linking Alexander Street and Brook Street. A drop-in session will also be held at Greystone Community Centre on Thursday 4 October between 4pm and 7pm.
The session will encourage community working and Carlisle City Council staff will be on hand to listen to any ideas residents have to help transform their lane and to tackle the next lanes for clean-up. Residents are encouraged to come along and help the council make a difference.
Cllr Chris Southward, Portfolio holder for Environment and Transport, said: “We want to keep Carlisle clean and tackle issues such as fly tipping and littering. The Neat Streets campaign is one way of working with communities to keep back lanes and other communal spaces free of rubbish. We want the back lanes to be cleaner and safer places for residents. By freeing up the space, the back lanes can be reclaimed as communal spaces for communities to use. We need the support of residents to ensure that the problem doesn’t continue. We also need information to allow us to prosecute those who continue to dump unwanted items.”
