Temporary changes to vehicular access to A&E at the Cumberland Infirmary

On Monday 8 October a road closure will temporarily change access to the Cumberland Infirmary’s Accident and Emergency (A&E) department for a period of two weeks.

The work will be taking place to improve an access road at the Infirmary. This will mean vehicular access to the hospital’s A&E department will be via a diversion.

Diversion signs will be in place to direct traffic and all vehicles which need access to the A&E department, disablement services and associated car parks will be from Infirmary Street on Newtown Road. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.

There will be no access to the rear of the hospital via the traffic lights at the junction with Newtown Road and Peel Street. The road closure does not affect the hospital’s main entrance or main visitor car park.

Michael Smillie, executive director of Finance, Digital, Estates & Support Services, said: “This is a very exciting time for the Trust as we undergo a number of changes to our hospitals including preparatory works for the new cancer centre. Unfortunately with these developments there will be some times when access roads need to be closed to allow for the work to take place. I would like to apologise for any inconvenience this closure may cause.”
