A stunning piece of dance theatre based on Moby Dick
Leviathan

Multi-award winning choreographer, James Wilton, re-imagines Herman Melville’s seminal novel, Moby Dick with a six- strong cast of dancers and his trademark blend of athletic dance, martial arts and Capoeira.

The story follows Ahab, a ship captain hell bent on capturing the white whale and his crew who blindly follow him on his perilous quest towards almost certain destruction.

This critically acclaimed, full – evening dance piece is performed in seven sections to a driving ambient soundtrack by Lunatic Soul. Solos, partner work and ensemble sequences are performed by the company’s six fearless and athletic dancers using a thrilling fusion of urban and contemporary movement, capoeira and martial arts.

The choreography communicates the themes of the novel – Ahab’s obsessive revenge quest to capture the white whale and man’s relationship with nature.

D H Lawrence described Moby Dick as “one of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world”. Peter Jacobs (Contact Manchester) described Leviathan as “a powerful, meaningful and unique piece of contemporary dance that should be recommended viewing for dance and non-dance fans alike”.

Beautiful and exhilarating to watch, Leviathan will have audiences on the edge of their seat, gasping for air under the sheer ferocity of movement.

“Extraordinary” The Stage. “Handsomely crafted, ambitious and exciting” The Times

Leviathan is touring to the Public Hall in Appleby with Highlights as part of a national Rural Touring Dance Initiative to increase the amount of quality, contemporary dance touring to village halls and rural communities. The initiative is led by the National Rural Touring Forum (NRTF), The Place dance institution, producers China Plate and Arts Charity Take Art and is ACE funded through its Strategic Touring Fund.

Frei Douglas, promoter at Appleby said ‘We are very excited to be hosting this show – it is a unique experience for Cumbria and should provide an extremely thrilling evening’s entertainment. We will be joined on the night by schools who have been doing workshops with the company prior to the show.’
