Last week, a group of young rowers from Magdalene College, Oxford took time out from their winter training on Derwentwater to speak to Keswick School students about life at one of the world’s top universities.
As a thank you to the school for providing access to rowing machines and gym facilities, the five undergraduates spoke to Year 11 and 12 pupils about their experiences, motivations and the Oxbridge application process. The talk will have undoubtedly provided added inspiration for the Keswick youngsters in achieving their future aspirations.
Keswick School prides itself on the level of support given to students applying to university as well as a tradition of preparing those wishing to go to the top institutions such as Oxford and Cambridge.
The Sixth Form, rated ‘outstanding’ by OFSTED, promotes independence and celebrates academic excellence as well as fostering a positive ethos which results in articulate and distinctive students. The most recent inspection recognised that Keswick School Sixth Formers are particularly well-prepared for future employment and higher education through the outstanding programme of study they are given. It is no surprise that 2018 saw some of the school’s best ever A’ level results.
Keswick School puts this continued level of achievement down to a supportive, friendly yet competitive culture which leads to highly motivated and successful students.
Only this week, Head Girl, Laura Wilson received an offer to study English and French at Christ Church College, Oxford and many of her colleagues are awaiting similar offers. “It didn’t occur to me to consider studying A’ levels anywhere other than at Keswick School” explained Laura, “From my first day, I have constantly benefited from not only the high standard of teaching and academic excellence, but also the rich sense of community prevalent among students and staff. Keswick Sixth Form is like a family, employing a nurturing yet firm approach to ensure the personal and academic success of all its members. Especially in Sixth Form, you have the opportunity to build personal relationships with teachers. Their evident passion and dedication have inspired and challenged me to strive for the best. Keswick School is a place where dreams truly can be realised.” Just like the Magdalene rowers, Laura’s example will act as inspiration for the next cohort of Keswick School Sixth Formers.
Keswick School Sixth Form is holding an Open Evening on 23rd January from 6.30pm for any students currently in Year 11. Further details and/or a Sixth Form prospectus are available from the school by telephoning 017687 72605 ext 202 or by going to the school website.
