David Gavin

A man who died following a fight in Rochdale has been named as David Gavin, from Castleton.

At around 8.55pm on Friday 17 May 2019, police were called to Berwick Street in Rochdale to reports of an ongoing fight.

David, 23, was taken to hospital with stab wounds, where he sadly died.

His family are being supported by specially trained officers.

A 25-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of murder and assault has been released under investigation.

A second woman, aged 21, has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. She remains in custody for questioning.

Police are continuing to appeal for information.

Detective Chief Inspector Cheryl Chatterton of GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “Our thoughts remain firmly with David’s family at this terrible time.

“While our investigations continue, they are being offered support from specialists as they deal with this devastating news.

“We believe the fight lasted for around 20 minutes before the call came into police and at some point David was stabbed.

“It was getting dark around the time of the incident. I appreciate there may not have been many people in the area but if you saw something, no matter how insignificant it may seem, then please get in touch.

“We know that a number of people in the area heard the disturbance, so if you do have something to tell us but you’ve not yet made contact, please do so at your earliest opportunity.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 8797 quoting reference number 2284 17/05/19 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
