Barrow road improvements to start next week

Road junction improvement works in Barrow are scheduled to start next week.

Cumbria County Council is delivering the £1.5m improvement project on North Road, Bridge Road and Michaelson Road, Barrow.

The road schemes are designed to improve traffic flow, ease traffic congestion and support job creation in Barrow.

The improvements will support further developments of Barrow Waterfront and the wider port area. They will also support BAE Systems’ Site Redevelopment Programme.

Works will include:

North Road/Bridge Road – On the junction of North Road/Bridge Road we will be replacing the existing roundabout with a new traffic light-controlled junction. This junction improvement will support growth at BAE Systems and the Port in the future. Significant improvements to pedestrian crossing facilities are a major element of this scheme.

Michaelson Road/Buccleuch Dock Road – On the junction of Michaelson Road and Buccleuch Dock Road, a new signalised traffic light-controlled junction will provide safe access to and from BAE System’s Buccleuch Dock Road car park and improved pedestrian crossing provision.

Two-way traffic will be maintained in the area as much as possible during the daytime while these works are carried out.

Works will also take place at night-time and traffic controls and road closures will be in place during the off-peak period from 7.30pm to 7am on some week days.

There will inevitably be disruption while these works are carried out and the county council apologises for any inconvenience. Drivers are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys during this period.

These works are scheduled to be completed by December 2019.
