Later this summer the inaugural Solway Spinner cycle sportive will head through the villages of Port Carlisle, Silloth and Mawbray as cyclists complete the picturesque 100km route around the Solway Coast.

On Sunday 11 August the first Solway Spinner, organised by BST Sporting Events, will see cyclists complete a classic route in north Cumbria offering some of the flattest roads in the county. The proceeds raised from this year’s Solway Spinner will be donated to Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice.

Mathew Ireland, Founder and Operations Manager at BST Sporting Events, said, “It’s a huge honour to be working with such a great local charity like Eden Valley Hospice. The work they do is outstanding and I am glad to be supporting them whilst promoting cycling in the county.”

Sam Johnston, Community and Events Fundraiser at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw said, “We are delighted to be partnering with Mathew and BST Sporting Events for the inaugural Solway Spinner Event. It looks like a wonderful cycling event and we would really encourage all of our fundraisers to sign up and get involved.

“The hospice has a long tradition with cycling events, including our annual Cycle the Solway event which, between 2011 and 2018 helped to raise an incredible £82,556.73 in aid of Eden Valley Hospice, Jigsaw and in 2018 Watchtree Nature Reserve too. Unfortunately, we have the taken the difficult decision not to host Cycle the Solway in 2019 but we are delighted to be the charity partner with the Solway Spinner and offer our fundraisers a brilliant cycling event around the beautiful Solway Coast.”

The Solway and coastal roads used during the Solway Spinner offer sights of Scotland and the Irish Sea as you ride west from Carlisle towards the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The route heads through the villages of Port Carlisle and Anthorn, before heading west again at Kirkbride. The feed station awaits you at the seaside town of Silloth, where cyclists can replenish and then follow the coastal road south towards Mawbray. From here, cyclists will head east via Wigton until you get back to Carlisle where a bacon butty and brew awaits.

With under 500m of elevation, this 100km route is perfect for a fast ride out. It’s also great for those looking to take on their first kilometre century. Registration for the Solway Spinner is £25 per person and you can sign up today at www.bstsportingevents.co.uk/solway-spinner
