MAYFIELD School students joined local organisations to give Mirehouse Community Centre a revamp on Monday (June 24).
The students spent time painting the walls alongside decorating firm Bell Decorating Group, who offered to paint the centre free of charge. The decorating firm also gave out free paint to residents throughout the day.
The day was part of the 10-week Future Pathways programme which aims to encourage children to give back to their community as well as teaching them key skills through team-building activities.
Future Pathways is run by the Copeland Hub in partnership with Copeland Borough Council and Cumbria Constabulary, working to tackle low level crime and support community projects. The programme is sponsored and co-delivered by Morgan Sindall Infrastructure.
Representatives from Well Whitehaven also took part in the revamp and have allocated £16,497 to refurbish the community centre, alongside £60,000 to upgrade the community play area.
Well Whitehaven is a £1 million project set up to benefit the communities of Whitehaven and Corkickle. Its ‘vision for the valley’ aims to help transform the communities where local people live, work and thrive. The project aims to improve the health, wealth and employment of the people of Mirehouse and Corkickle.

Emma Williamson, Well Whitehaven Regeneration Officer, said: “It was great to have the opportunity to work alongside Mayfield students to inject a new lease of life back into the community centre.
“Their enthusiasm was infectious and it’s fantastic to see local schools and organisations working together to improve their community.”
