The woman’s body was found on Wilmslow Road

A man is in custody after a woman was found dead in Withington.

Shortly after 12.05am this morning (Friday 19 July 2019), police were called by the ambulance service to a property on Wilmslow Road in Withington after they discovered the body of a woman – believed to be in her 50s.

Officers attended and a 57-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody for questioning.

A scene remains in place this morning whilst forensic work is carried out by specialist officers.

Formal identification and a Home Office Post Mortem examination are yet to take place.

Detective Chief Inspector Carl Jones, of GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “My thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who was sadly pronounced dead earlier this morning and we have specially trained officers supporting them.

“I know this is distressing news for the community to wake up to this morning but I want to reassure you that we have a team of dedicated detectives who will be in the area for some time and are working hard to determine what happened.

“Whilst we have a man in custody who we will continue to question today, we’re keeping an open mind surrounding the circumstances of her death and would urge anyone with information to get in touch as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information should contact GMP on 0161 856 6777 quoting reference number 0061 of 19/07/2019, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
