Work to revamp WGH theatres complete after £1.6 million investment

A theatre at Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) has received extensive refurbishment work to help improve the environment for patients and staff.

The project, part of a £1.6million investment to improve the WGH theatres, includes an upgraded anaesthetic room, scrub room, operating theatre, prep room, dirty utility and sterile store.

During the refurbishment, theatre capacity was maintained with the use of a temporary modular decant facility located on the hospital site.

Sue Howard, WGH Surgery Matron for University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT), said:

“We are extremely pleased with the theatre refurbishment. It has already massively improved things for both patients and staff.

“It can be quite daunting for some people who come into hospital for surgery, but being welcomed into a modern and bright theatre can really help to put patients at ease.”

“The revamp has also helped to boost staff morale as we can all now look forward to coming to work in a brand new theatre!”

The WGH theatre renovations are part of a £21million investment for capital projects across UHMBT, with other projects including the renovation of the Children’s Unit at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and a new resus facility at Furness General Hospital.

The project was managed by the UHMBT capital services team who worked closely with the infection prevention team, design consultants and building contractors to ensure that each phase of the work was completed with as little disruption as possible to hospital staff and service users.
