Penrith Road, Keswick flood alleviation update

Major engineering works, valued at £2m, designed to increase the flood resilience of Keswick in the Penrith Road area of the town are progressing well. The works will help to protect 118 homes from the risk of flooding.

Key drainage connections between the new temporary storage basin at Springs Field and the River Greta are nearing completion, and contractors are working on the construction of the pumping station and control kiosk in Penrith Road.

During the excavation for the pumping station on Penrith Road, contractors discovered a United Utilities water main under the road surface, which required a diversion. In addition, discovery of a number of large river boulders are taking time to remove due to the limited working space. Unfortunately, this means a delay to the project, which will likely extend the closure of Penrith Road until the first week of February 2020.

The team have considered several options for dealing with the delay. However, following careful consideration, the council has decided that the preferred option is to keep the road closed during the Christmas period until the first week of February 2020.

Drivers will be able to follow the current diversion system via the Crosthwaite roundabout and advance signage will be maintained throughout the schedule of works.

Philip Greenup, Cumbria County Council’s Acting Assistant Director for Highways and Transport said:

“The project team and contractor have spoken to many residents and businesses at the regular drop-in sessions in Keswick Library and the team fully appreciates that the delay will impact the community and are working hard to get the job done as quickly as possible.

“We are disappointed that the project will be delayed and apologise to those affected by the extension to the road closure. We would like to thank residents, businesses and visitors for their cooperation and understanding whilst we carry out this essential flood prevention work. The benefits of this scheme in protecting properties and businesses from future flooding outweigh the impact of a temporary road closure, and we are committed to ensuring that Keswick is protected.”

Drop in sessions continue every Tuesday between 10am and 12pm at Keswick Library for members of the public.
