The publication last week of the 16-18 performance tables once again places Keswick School as the top performer in West Cumbria.
With an impressive progress score of 0.29 and the largest Sixth Form cohort in West Cumbria (and third largest for the whole of Cumbria) students have once again achieved beyond and above their expectations and secured places at top universities across the UK. This is down to careful planning and exemplary support, which together with a strong work ethic, enables students to achieve outstanding success. This week Keswick School was also delighted to receive notification that two A-level students have been offered places at Oxford and Cambridge – Natalie Williams to read Physics at Oxford and Jos Higgins to read Maths at Cambridge.
This is a well-deserved achievement based on the students’ ability, hard work and the advice and guidance provided by the school. Keswick prides itself on the level of support given to students applying to university as well as a tradition of preparing those wishing to go to the top institutions such as Oxford and Cambridge.
Jos Higgins, who has been offered a place at Trinity College, Cambridge said: “I was delighted to receive an offer to study at Cambridge.
“I am grateful for the support provided by those whom have taught me, especially Mr Campion, the Head of Maths, who has provided me with encouragement for the past two years. I am now focusing on my upcoming exams in order to get the best grades I can and hopefully meet the conditions of my offer.”
Over the past couple of years Keswick School Sixth Form has developed a unique programme of support for Oxbridge applicants. Open Days, guest speakers and a three day visit to Queen’s College, Oxford form just part of the programme developed to help our students reach their full potential.
There has also been interview preparation, problem solving classes and peer mentoring as well as support from former students currently attending the top universities. Of the students who took advantage of the programme, six have also successfully applied and received offers to study medicine at a variety of institutions.
Dr Foody, Head of Year 13, commented: “Keswick School Sixth Form students have an enviable record of gaining offers at top universities including Oxbridge and the Russell group. These offers are in subjects ranging from veterinary science and engineering to English literature, history and law.
“We offer personalised and focused support for all our A level students irrespective of the university applied to or pathway chosen. This year, our Sixth Formers have chosen to study a variety of subjects at numerous institutions around the country.
“We are also pleased to have been able to help several students achieve offers for higher level and degree apprenticeships as well as securing employment opportunities.”
