Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall, is urging the residents of Cumbria to follow the rules put in place by the UK Government on Monday 23 March.

The rules state no one is to leave their home unless they are shopping for essentials, exercising alone or with household members and travelling to and from essential work where working from home is not an option. The police are working hard to support the NHS and avoid our health system being overwhelmed, everyone one of us has a part to play in support.

Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall, said: “These rules put in place by the Government really are important and it is all of our duty to play our part and follow them.

“The rules are for our own good and for other people in our communities.

“We can all do the right thing, consider our neighbours and those around us.

“It’s so important that we follow these rules as we are trying to reduce the risk of cases in the county and the only way we can do that is by staying away from each other as best as possible.

“The virus cannot travel and spread without our help so if we eliminate unnecessary travel we eliminate the virus – this really is a community effort.

“The Police have been doing a fantastic job since the outbreak began and they can enforce these rules if people are caught breaking them. I would hope that we would all just do the right thing but the police will enforce where necessary.

“We must all act to preserve lives and by limiting the spread we are supporting those colleagues on the NHS frontline and other critical services who are putting themselves in danger for us.

“Please continue to monitor updates in the media, this is an evolving situation and we should all be prepared to change and adapt our behaviour as the situation develops.

“We can and will come through this challenge and the police and all other agencies are working round the clock to protect us, and to support the NHS, but, by working together, and everyone one of us playing our part, we can overcome this extraordinary threat to our communities.”
