Five new Deputy Lieutenants appointed in Cumbria

Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, Claire Hensman

The Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Mrs Claire Theresa Hensman, on Tuesday 2 April 2020 appointed the following to be Deputy Lieutenants for the County of Cumbria:

Mrs Caroline Thomson, lives in Abbeytown.

  • Has various national roles, currently including – Oxfam, National Gallery, Digital UK, and English National Ballet. Caroline was Chief Operating Officer of the BBC and responsible for bringing the BBC to Media City in Salford.
  • Trustee of Tullie House
  • Past Trustee of Cumbria Community Foundation.

Commander (SCC) Philip Burns MBE RNR, lives in Barrow.

  • Recently retired from BAE Submarines
  • Senior Staff officer for the North West for the Sea Cadets and on the National Sea Cadet Advisory Council
  • Member of the Cumbria and Lancashire Advisory Committee for the Appointment of Magistrates.

Colonel (Retd) Christopher Sanderson OBE JP, lives near Kendal.

  • Chairman of Cumbria Scouts, Patterdale Mountain Rescue Association, and recent Chairman of the Army Benevolent Fund’s Cumbria Committee
  • Trustee of the Community Foundation and Armitt Museum
  • Current Magistrate

Ms Marcia Reid Fotheringham JP, lives in Brampton.

  • High Sheriff for Cumbria 2019/2020
  • Past Chairman of the North West Cumbria Magistrates’ Bench
  • Past trustee of Safety Net
  • Trustee of Tullie House
  • Trustee of Cumbria Victims Charitable Trust
  • Trustee of Cumbria Community Foundation
  • Current Magistrate

Mr Peter Woolaghan, lives near Egremont.

  • Chair of the REACT Foundation and a founding director of REACT Engineering
  • Founding director of Createc.

HM Lord-Lieutenant for Cumbria, Mrs Claire Hensman, said: “I am delighted to appoint five new Deputy Lieutenants to the county to assist me in my duties as the Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria. I have a number of Deputy Lieutenants located around the county who have a wealth of experience in connection with voluntary organisations, the Armed Forces and all other aspects of life in Cumbria.”

In the United Kingdom, a Deputy Lieutenant is a Crown appointment and one of several deputies to the Lord-Lieutenant of a lieutenancy area.
