Cumbria Army Cadet Force have appointed Lucy Charlton to be the new Cadet Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) for Cumbria’s Army Cadets.

Lucy Charlton, aged 17, currently attends Nelson Thomlinson School, Wigton and is the first female Cadet RSM to hold the post for over 10 years.  Lucy is currently studying for her A-Levels and hopes to join the Queen’s Royal Alexander Nursing Corps, the nursing arm of the Army, after doing a nursing degree at Birmingham.

Lucy joined Cumbria Army Cadet Force at the age of 12 and has loved her Cadet experience;  “Both my brothers were in the cadets and I saw all the exciting things that they did on weekends and detachment nights.  Both have later gone on to join the British Army and are still currently serving, following the footsteps of our dad, who was also in the army for 10 years.  My mum, Wendy, is a community nurse so it all matches up really well.

“Through cadets, I have had lots of amazing experiences ranging from travelling in the UK to travelling abroad, including trips to both Arnhem and France. However, the current pandemic has unfortunately stopped the scheduled venture to the Turks and Caicos Islands but hopefully I’ll get to go next year.”

Speaking about her promotion and new appointment Colonel Guy Harnby, the Commandant of Cumbria Army Cadets, said: “Lucy is the perfect fit for this promotion and the appointment of being the senior Cadet in our County Army Cadet Force.  She is a role model for the younger Cadets and for our young boys and girls and sets fantastically high standards for all those around her.  She will be a great asset to the Army as a nurse once she completes her nursing qualifications.”
