A free course designed to help a wider range of people take advantage of job opportunities in the care sector has been announced by Lakes College.
Nationally the Government has embarked on a recruitment drive to sign up 20,000 more care workers in response to the coronavirus crisis and local employers have confirmed they have vacancies to fill.
So Lakes College has set up an employability course to ensure everyone can benefit from the opportunities.
The course will be taught remotely over eight days and ensure people who may be returning to the jobs market after a break have the skills and information to secure the training and jobs on offer.
Rachel Melton, Careers & Employability Leader at the college, said: “We’ve run this course at the college many times to help people get back into work and are confident we can replicate that success with an online version.
“The sessions are designed to help those who might need help in securing a job after a break to have children or a period of unemployment.
“When you’ve been out of the job market for a while – whatever the reason – the thought of returning to work can seem daunting, but we’re here to help and we’ve assisted hundreds of people in this situation over the years.”
Debbie Ellwood, deputy manager of Bellcare Domiciliary Care Services, confirmed that the firm is recruiting care workers across Cumbria.
She said: “Due to our ongoing expansion we are looking to recruit more care workers and have vacancies in all our areas including Workington, Maryport, Whitehaven, Cockermouth, Silloth ,Aspatria , Wigton, Penrith and Keswick.
“Working in care is a good option for people thinking about returning to work. We have a well earned reputation for providing great working conditions for career development and excellent rates of pay for our employees.

The Level 1 Award and Certificate in Employability and Professional Development will be a free course and is seen as an ideal route into further training leading to equip people for local vacancies.
The course will cover many areas including ICT skills, best practise in the workplace, project work and presentation skills. It will also help with CV writing, applications and finding vacancies and opportunities locally.
It will run for six week from June 15 with eight days work that will involve two online sessions which are likely to run between nine and 2pm.
As well as being able to take advantage of our free employability course people are being encouraged to consider a range of care distance learning courses to increase their knowledge of the care sector. Courses include topics such as dementia care, handling medicine, mental health and common health conditions.
