Workington Amateur Operatic Society have announced that they are postponing their production of “Shrek the Musical” until next year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The society was due to perform the family favourite at the Carnegie Theatre in October 2020 but it will now take place in October 2021, following the agreement of the licence holders.
This is only the second time in 48 years that WAOS have had to reschedule a major production. In 1972 their October production of Fiddler on the Roof was postponed until the Spring of 1973, after the builders’ strike had held up modernisation work to the Carnegie Theatre delaying the completion date.
Despite their disappointment WAOS are eagerly anticipating being able to perform to audiences again next year. They hope that they will be able to go ahead with plans for a full society concert featuring both the senior and junior sections performing West End favourites in Spring 2021.
“Shrek the Musical” Artistic Director Tony McGee said: It’s a huge shame that our plans for 2020 have had to be pushed back until next year. But by the time our shows reach our audiences we will have had the time to ensure they are spectacular.
Tickets for “Shrek the Musical” will be on sale later in the year. Anybody who has bought tickets for the original date should contact the Carnegie Theatre if they have not already done so to re-arrange their booking.
