Snow and ice warnings for Cumbria

Snow and ice have hit Cumbria again this week – with drivers being warned to take care on the roads.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for today and tomorrow across much of England and all of Scotland.

It says roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

Around one to two centimetres of snow is likely to settle this morning  at low levels quite widely, with three to six centimetres above 200 metres and up to 10cm above 300 metres.

Rain is more likely around some coasts, and snow may also turn to rain at low levels inland before clearing to leave a risk of ice on untreated surfaces this morning.

Showers, a mixture of rain sleet and snow, are expected to fall onto frozen surfaces leading to icy stretches forming.

A more persistent spell of rain and hill snow is likely to spread south across northern England and north Wales during this evening and night.

While ice is expected to be the main hazard, snow is likely in place too.

Snow is most likely to fall over The Pennines, North York Moors and the high ground of Wales.

Elsewhere, whilst some snowfall is possible, accumulations are likely to be slight and temporary.
