Tributes have been paid to the efforts of Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service in tackling the devastating wildfire that recently engulfed a large swathe of Cumbrian fellside.
Frank Morgan, a Labour Cumbria County Councillor for the Cleator Moor West division, paid tribute to the fire service for their efforts in tackling the wildfire near Cogra Moss, Lamplugh, last month.
Mr Morgan noted their efforts at last week’s meeting of the county council’s local committee for Copeland, which is made up of county councillors representing the Copeland area.
The wildfire broke out on Saturday February 13, and burned for a total of 27 hours.
Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, which falls under the authority of Cumbria County Council, scrambled about 40 firefighters to tackle the blaze.
Seven fire engines and three specialist ‘wildfire’ units were called in total to the scene to bring the fire under control.
It was estimated that as much as 20 square kilometres of vegetation was destroyed in the fire.
