One of the first steps in the development of Carlisle’s St Cuthbert’s Garden Village is due to be completed this week.
Contractors have been on site at Sewell Lane to widen the road, to improve safety and support the early development of the 10,000-home garden village.
Sewell Lane is due to reopen on Monday, allowing traffic to flow in both directions along the full length of the road.
Cumbria County Council and Carlisle City Council secured funding from Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership and Homes England to widen the 110-metre section of road.
The improvement was identified as a requirement in the Carlisle District Local Plan 2015-2030.
St Cuthbert’s Garden Village aims to deliver 10,000 new homes and employment opportunities within Carlisle.
Cumbria County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, Keith Little, said: “I am delighted the works at Sewell Lane have been completed and the road is due to reopen on Monday.
“This is a key component of the early stages to deliver the St Cuthbert’s Garden Village project, and enhances road safety.
“I’d like to thank Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership for their financial support to this scheme and also the local community for their patience whilst the works have been carried out.”
Carlisle City councillor Paul Nedved, portfolio holder for economy, enterprise and housing, said: “The road work completion is another important step forward for the delivery of St Cuthbert’s Garden Village.
“We’d like to thank all our partners for their support. The upgraded access route will improve road safety in the area.”
Jim Jackson, chair of Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership’s investment panel, said: “Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership is pleased to support these important infrastructure improvements to unlock land in the Carleton area for new housing development as well as supporting the early stages of the St Cuthbert’s Garden Village.
“The development of new homes in Carlisle is essential as we seek to attract new residents to Cumbria to support our economic growth ambitions.”
