Five projects are to benefit from a share of £2,500 from an NHS hospital trust.

Millom Prostate Cancer Support Group, Millom Cricket Club, Millom Parents and Carers Disability Group, Good Enough Start group and Millom Recreation Centre each bid for up to £500 for a health and wellbeing project.

The Millom Integrated Care Community (ICC) funding will be used for:

  • a new laptop for the Millom Prostate Cancer Support Group
  • a new defibrillator at Millom Cricket Club (which was match-funded by Cumbria County Council)
  • swimming lessons for children of the Millom Parents and Carers Disability Group
  • craft items for Good Enough Start group
  • free exercise sessions at Millom Recreation Centre for approximately 45 key workers to help their wellbeing

Jenny Riley, Millom ICC development lead, said: “It has been our absolute pleasure to give back to the community through our community fund.

“All successful bids are very deserving of the monies and this will make a big difference to the community of Millom.”

Millom Prostate Cancer Support Group

Millom Prostate Cancer Support Group is a group of men who have all had prostate cancer. The group was established in 2019 with the aim of helping men and their wives/partners to cope with the disease. You can read more about the group here.

Tony O’Malley, from the Millom Prostate Cancer Group, said: “The funding we received from Millom ICC helped us with the purchase of a Lenovo laptop computer, with this we can create new advertising literature and leaflets for the Millom group, we have also used the laptop to update our website at https://www.millompcsg.org.uk/.”

Millom Cricket Club

Millom Cricket Club is a friendly, sociable and inclusive cricket club that supports local events and causes.

Dave High, at Millom Cricket Club, said: “As a club, we would like to extend our thanks to yourselves for the funding we received towards the purchase of a defibrillator.

“During these testing times, funding is vital to us as a club and we are delighted to have been able to provide an important piece of equipment that will not only provide peace of mind to the club and its members but to the community as a whole. Thanks again.”

Millom Parents and Carers Disability Group supports parents and carers, of children with disabilities, in and around the Millom area, meet, chat, support each other and share ideas. The group aims to work together to raise funds to enable us to put on activities for its children.

The group also raise awareness of the lack of facilities and opportunities for disabled children in our area. You can find out more about the group here.

Good Enough Start

Good Enough Start supports parent and infant mental health by empowering all parents to create a secure parent-infant relationship. You can find more about GES here.

Deanna Carlton, for the Good Enough Start (GES) Team, said: “The ICC community fund has allowed us to purchase craft/activity/sensory boxes from ‘Starts from Scratch’ to allow parents the opportunity to recreate special intimate moments while at home that they would of previously have got from attending a parent-baby group.

“These small intimate interactions between parents and their babies help to build the important parent-infant relationship.”

Millom Recreation Centre

Millom Recreation Centre offers sports facilities and a variety of exercises classes as well as supporting community events.

Marion Giles, Director, Trustee and Chairman of Millom Recreation Centre, said: “The funding will provide a free class pass to our NHS workers and care workers within our community.

“Unfortunately, because of the current lockdown, the centre is closed, following government guidelines, so we have not been able to provide the service to our key workers as yet. As soon as we are open again, we will immediately provide the class passes to those key workers as originally planned.”
