Tributes have been paid to a former mayor of Kendal who has died.

Avril Dobson served as a councillor for the Kirkland ward for Kendal Town Council between 1976 to 2006, with a short break from service during these years, giving a total of 24 years active service. She served as Mayor of Kendal on two occasions in 1994 and 2002.

She will be best remembered for her dedication and efficient way in resolving issues, a spokeswoman for Kendal Town Council said.

She died at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary on May 3 after heart failure. She was 82.

Serving Mayor of the town, Doug Rathbone said: “Avril was devoted to her community in Kirkland and to service for the greater good of the whole of Kendal for almost a quarter of a century. Our thoughts are with her family at this time.”

In keeping with the tradition of former Mayors of Kendal, Avril’s life will be commemorated by the flag on the Town Hall being flown at half-mast, on May 18, the day of her funeral.
