A man was taken to hospital after becoming trapped in the rock armour on the shore of Whitehaven yesterday.
Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team was called out to help the member of the public who had fallen and become trapped on the town’s North Shore.
A spokesman said: “Due to the incoming tide, a request was made for the immediate launch of St Bees RNLI and Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team to assist.
“On our arrival at scene, along with a member of the RNLI shore crew, the casualty was located in a precarious position on the rock armour close to the shore.
“Coastguards and RNLI worked together to asses the casualty, before stabilising into a stretcher and then carefully extracting over the rock armour.
“The casualty was then handed into the care of North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust and Cumbria police.
“These kinds of incidents go to show the importance of close working relations between all emergency services.”
St Bees RNLI said one of its casualty care trained volunteers was in the area and was first on the scene. They attended to the casualty until members of the Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team arrived.
An RNLI spokesman said: “St Bees lifeboat quickly made its way to Whitehaven where it was decided the best way to bring the casualty to safety was to place him on the lifeboat stretcher and float him round to the waiting ambulance.
“Along with members of Whitehaven Coastguard the RNLI volunteers waded waist deep into the Irish sea and using the RNLI stretcher floated the casualty to the waiting ambulance.
“After the St Bees lifeboat crew safely handed the man over to the North West Ambulance Service, the lifeboat returned to station.”
St Bees RNLI operations manager Dick Beddows said: “This was a great multi-agency operation with a positive outcome.”
It is understood the man was not seriously injured.
