Five fire engines and other emergency services have been in Carlisle battling a large blaze in the roof space of five terraced homes.

Crews were called to Linton Street mid-afternoon today and are working to stop the fire spreading any further.

Police were drafted in at around 3.15pm to help evacuate the area.

No injuries have been reported and people are urged to stay away from the scene.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said 10 firefighters were using hosereels and main jets to help tackle the blaze and the service’s aerial ladder platform was deployed to fight the fire from above.

Crews from Carlisle West Fire Station, Carlisle East Fire Station, Brampton Fire Station, Wigton Fire Station and Longtown Fire Station were involved in the incident.

Longtown Fire Station said its crew was released from the scene at around 7pm, but added: “There will be fire crews in attendance for some time.”
