Dabba Hewson’s bike ride in memory of Tony Hopper

Penrith AFC first team manager Dave “Dabba” Hewson saddled up to support two charities this weekend — and is searching for a new assistant.

Hewson was part of a 30-strong team tackling a 135-mile one-day C2C ride from Workington to Tynemouth yesterday.

They are raising funds for the Eden Valley Hospice in recognition of the care they gave to his friend and former Workington team-mate Tony Hopper, who died in 2018 after battling motor neurone disease.

Hewson is also collecting donations for the Alzheimer’s Society, with ex-Reds manager Tommy Cassidy suffering from the disease.

“My ride’s in memory of Tony and in support of Tommy,” 38-year-old Hewson said.

As Penrith first team prepare for a full return to pre-season training, he is also looking for a new assistant after coach Chris Blake took up a full-time job in Finland.

“We’re looking for someone to support in that coaching role alongside me, to try and carry on the good work Chris started and continue to take the club in the right direction,” said Hewson.
