Cumbria police is encouraging people to submit video footage of road traffic offences as part of a new operation.
Operation Snap is national operation enabling the public to submit video footage easily and quickly to the police of road traffic offences.
The plea follows a man being convicted at North and West Magistrates Court on June 17 for driving without due care and attention after dashcam footage was submitted to police.
Jacob Evans, 19, of Denton Street, Carlisle, was fined £200, and received five points on his licence, following an incident on March 7 in Penrith when Evans crossed the path of another vehicle without notification causing the vehicle to brake, and continued to drive erratically.
Officers are encouraging members of the public who have dash cameras fitted to their vehicle to report offences they witness.
Members of the public can report road traffic offences here
Offences include:
- Overtaking on solid white lines
- Using a mobile phone whilst driving
- Failing to comply with traffic signals
- Contravening traffic directions
- Endangering other road user through poor driving
This form is not for submitting footage of collisions or any other offences.
Sergeant Callum Young, of the constabulary’s mobile support group, said: “Making the roads of Cumbria safer is a key priority for us.
“Operation Snap enables officers to see the types of behaviour that go on when dangerous drivers feel they are not under the scrutiny of a police officer.
“It allows the public to be our eyes and submit footage of road related offences they see.
“Such incidents of dangerous overtakes near misses and road rage can now be uploaded directly to officers and we can use this information to educate or prosecute drivers.
“If you think you’ve witnessed a traffic offence, or captured dashcam footage, we’d like to hear from you.”
Cumbria’s police and crime commissioner, Peter McCall, said: “Anti-social driving is one of my main priorities.
“So many of Cumbria’s roads are rural and narrow so it is essential that we drive all appropriately.
“Laws are in place to protect every road user and breaking these laws can result in injuries and worst case, deaths.
“If anyone has footage of drivers breaking these laws, please submit it to the police – together we can make Cumbria an even safer place to drive.”
