A group of Carlisle Brownies have taken action to help keep their local area clear of litter and dog fouling.
The 1st Wetheral Brownies have designed eye-catching anti-dog fouling posters and have taken part in a litter pick, as part of this year’s Great British Spring Clean, with the support of some of Carlisle City Council’s civil enforcement officers. The posters are now on display in and around Wetheral and Carlisle.
When the Brownies contacted the council, officers visited them and thanked them for their community spirit – providing some goodie bags as a thank you.
In addition to increasing enforcement patrols in the area, they also printed the posters to display within Wetheral.
The former mayor of Carlisle, Marilyn Bowman also wrote to thank them for their hard work and support.
Councillor Nigel Christian, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “We’d like to send on our huge thanks to the 1st Wetheral Brownies for taking action.
“The posters they’ve created will hopefully encourage their fellow residents to pick up their dog foul and to dispose of their litter responsibly. “
The Brownies have been working on their Speak Out interest badge.
This involves the girls identifying an issue which they feel strongly about and doing something about it. The issue close to the girl’s hearts – and they are a group of animal loving children, many of whom own dogs themselves – is that of dog fouling and irresponsible owners not cleaning up after their dogs.
Georgina Collins, of the 1st Wetheral Brownies, added: “Great citizens from tiny people grow!
“Thank you to the city council for all your enthusiastic support for the Brownies’ efforts – it is much appreciated. The power of a litter gripper in an eight-year-old’s hand has to be seen to be believed!”
