Landmark buildings in Cumbria will light up blue to mark the NHS’s 73rd birthday and Thank You Day.

Carlisle’s civic centre and cathedral, Penrith Town Hall, Allerdale House in Workington and Whitehaven’s Candlestick and Beacon Museum are among the buildings which will be lit up on Sunday to say thank you to the NHS staff and the wider community for all their work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr Amanda Boardman, lead GP for NHS North Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “It’s been a challenging year for the country, and we owe a massive thank you to all of
our community for playing their part in reducing the spread of COVID.

“We know people have had a difficult time and have made huge sacrifices and we thank them for all they did to protect the NHS.

“We would also like to thank all our NHS and care staff across Cumbria for their response to COVID and for their work on the vaccine programme – especially the volunteers – who have continue to play such a vital role.”

The 73rd birthday of the NHS is on Monday and Thank You Day is on Sunday.
