Whitehaven RL paid tribute to two stalwarts who died since the last home game, ahead of kick-off against Dewsbury Rams.
Wreaths were laid in the centre of the field and fans joined in a minute’s applause in memory of life-long fan Lenny Canavan, 91, and club strapman Vic Semple, 76.
The funeral for Lenny, grandfather of current chief executive Andrew Canavan, was held on Friday while the funeral for Vic is to be held next Monday, August 16 at Distington Crematorium at 1.15pm.
Whitehaven were left battling to hold a narrow lead, in front 18-0 at the break but only 20-18 at the end.
Assistant coach Jonty Gorley said: “We were outstanding in the first half, getting the completions we asked for and scoring four good tries.
“But it was a different story in the second-half and this sort of inconsistency has plagued us all season.
“We let them back into the game and it’s something we have to keep going on at them about.
“In the end it was a win, our fourth in a row at home, so we are doing something right but it has become so frustrating through the inconsistency.”
Certainly the result, if not the second-half performance, would have been approved by Lenny and Vic.
