West Cumbria’s two racing federations moved a step nearer their scheduled get-together for an Amalgamation race next weekend.
The Derwent Valley Federation raced from Charnock Richard, liberating at 8am and five minutes later, 20-odd miles further on at Appleton, the West Cumberland Federation let go.
Now the plan is for the Derwent Valley Federation to have a mid-week race from Appleton and join up with their neighbours for another Appleton race at the weekend.
At the moment the forecast has Monday and Wednesday as the best days but Derwent Valley officials will monitor the situation very closely over the next 48 hours.
The Derwent Valley birds were first into the air and the leaders covered the 77 miles into Workington in just under an hour and three quarters, about 44mph.
The West Cumberland Federation birds from Appleton saw the winner, Steve Chambers of Sandwith clock in two hours and ten minutes, doing a speed of 42mph for the 92 miles.
Fanciers from both Federations were highly delighted with the returns as the excellent young bird racing continued.
