Workington Zebras are stepping up their community activities and expanding their youth set-up.
Their base at the Ellis Sports Ground has just hosted children and young people from the Imagine project, run by Cumbria Development Education Centre (CDEC) and the Laal Collective.
The project is funded through the Cumbria Holiday Activity Programme and the overall programme is funded by Government.
It is administered by Cumbria County Council to support families of children in Cumbria on benefits-related free school meals.
Activities are provided free of charge for these children.
Workington RFC head of development Andrew Branthwaite, who ran various rugby themed fun games for the kids, was pleased to have them down.
He said: “Thank you to the kids for coming down and trying something new. Hopefully we will see a few continue with the sport more regularly at our junior training sessions.
“These last 18 months have been hard for a lot of people in our community and their families. It was great to hear of the CDEC initiative in supporting these kids and we are glad Workington RFC could help in a small way.
“Workington RUFC is a community club. I want those involved in the club to be more active in the community and more vocal about it when we do.
“I want anyone associated with this club to be recognised as a valuable member of the community.
“If anyone in the community has suggestions of how our club can support them, then please get in touch.
“We have coaches to support age groups from Under-6’s all the way through to adults. Teams are mixed from Under-6 to Under-11 and this season will also see the start of at least one girls’ age group (U13s and/or u15s).”
For further details for any age group anyone interested should contact Workington Zebras RFC Facebook page.
