City of Liverpool supporters and officials have admitted they were “mesmerised” by Workington’s performance on Tuesday.
Three second-half goals gave Reds a 3-0 win after they had dominated the game from the first whistle.
An official club tweet said – “If anyone finishes above them this season they will be champions of this division.”
Reds director Les Byers said: “At half-time, their chairman and board members told me it was one of, if not the best, team performances they had ever seen at our level. They said they were mesmerised and in the Hopper Bar afterwards, their fans were extremely envious and equally complimentary.”
Also adding his approval was former Reds’ favourite Jonny Wright, up for a few days from London to visit family.
“That was very impressive, as good as I’ve seen at this level for a long time. I always look for the Reds result and wish them all the best for the season. I hope they can get the promotion they have deserved for the last two years,” he said.
But new manager Chris Willcock has been round the block too many times to get carried away by the early plaudits.
He knows life will get a lot tougher starting on Saturday with an FA Cup game against Marine, who have also started with two wins, scoring three goals in each game.
Come kick-off though he will know most of what he needs to from his former number two Lee Donafee, now in charge at Ramsbottom who lost 3-0 at home to Marine on Tuesday.
Former Reds midfielder David Lynch had to come off with a knee injury and is being assessed tonight on whether he will be able to travel.
Lynch took over as manager of Clitheroe last season and in the truncated campaign had done well so it was a surprise to see him leave on the eve of the current season. His departure was announced at the same time as Ramsbottom revealed that Willcock was leaving.
