Workington Pool League cues up for new season

The JJ’s Workington Pool League is gearing up to resume playing again with the 2021/22 season starting on Thursday, October 7.

Before then some unfinished competitions from the curtailed 2019/20 season will be played after the League committee agreed a way forward.

The committee decided that the A League should be awarded as of its result with five games to complete JJ’s were declared champions as they were six points ahead of Senhouse Street who will be runners-up – two points clear of Packhorse A.

In the B League there were three declared winners and no runners-up as Miners A, Railway A and Grapes A were all level on points and six points clear of Packhorse B.

The A and B League Top 4 play-offs and the Best of the Rest will not be played due to lack of time.

However the APH Travel Team Knockout Semi Finals will be played over two legs before Wednesday September 15 with the final in the Packhorse on Thursday, September 16.  Lining-up are Grapes (0) 4-5 v (0) Senhouse St and Vets Club (0) v (0) Station Road D.

It’s the same with the APH Travel Team Knockout Plate Semi Finals  to be played over two legs before Wednesday 15th September with the final in the Vets Club on Thursday, September 16. Involved in the semi-finals are – JJ’s B (+1) 5-4 (+2) Grapes A and Station Road B (+1) v (+1) Harrington Legion.

Some of the individual winners from the 2019/20 season were confirmed from finals in March 2020.

The Captain’s Trophy went to Karl Newton (Packhorse A) who beat Scott Messenger (Lifeboat A) with beaten semi-finalists Sandy Smith (JJ’s B) and Martyn Fisher (Flimby).

The Cumbria Trophy was won by Paul Vickers (Flimby) with the runner up Dan Hancox (Station Road D) and the beaten semi-finalists Sam Williamson (Lifeboat) and Lewis Tilley (Packhorse A).

Northern Trophies A League Leading player was Barry Collins of Station Road B and the WashHouse B League Leading player was Paul Skipsey (Miners A).

The Maryport Bodyworks League Singles last 16 ties are required to be played before Wednesday September 8 with the Finals Night being played on Thursday September 9 in JJ’s with a 7pm start.

The West Coast Thermal League Doubles last 16 ties are to be played before Wednesday September 9 and the last eight ties to be played before Wednesday September 22 with the Finals night being played on Thursday September 23 in Station Road Club with a 7pm start.

League secretary John Teasdale said: “We have set the date for our AGM which will cover all our 2019-20 season completion and the upcoming 2021-22 season for Friday September 3, Station Road Club 8pm start as we look to begin the League on Thursday October 7.

*We want all teams who are looking to enter the league to attend the meeting to ensure entry is made, and any proposals can be made to the league via either Facebook or captains Whatsapp up until Wednesday September 1.”
