Barrow battled long and hard against Newcastle Thunder before going under 30-6 in their home Championship clash.
The final score certainly flattered the visitors who did not really pull away until the final quarter when full-time training in humid, stifling conditions gave them the edge.
It was Barrow who had taken the lead on 22 minutes when Newcastle make a mistake in their own 10 metre area.
Curtis Teare scooped up the loose ball and made no mistake by going in at the corner for an unconverted try.
Newcastle got their noses in front nine minutes later after Barrow had been building an attack near the Thunder line.
A pass was intercepted and Jack Smith outpaced the Barrow team in a 90 metre race to the other end. Will Roberts converted.
Four minutes before the break Newcastle were penalised for a ball steal and Brad Walker landed the penalty to make it all square.
It had been a really physical half, with defences on top and both sides totally committed.
The crucial breakthrough try went Thunder’s way on 57 minutes after a period of strong pressure. Jordan Lipp forced his way rather too easily through a tackle and had the pace to go the rest of the way. Roberts converted.
Barrow were attacking again on 64 minutes when Newcastle capitalised. Barrow’s attacking kick was palmed back but straight into the hands of Roberts who went 50 metres to score and add the extras.
The Raiders were now starting to feel the strain and on 73 minutes Brad Ward sliced through some tired defending to score and again Roberts added the conversion.
It was Roberts who scored the final points with a try and conversion after he pounced on a loose ball, hacked through from halfway and went over under the posts.
