Workington Reds boss on verge of making sixth signing

Workington Reds boss Chris Willcock is preparing to make a sixth signing ahead of Saturday’s trip to Widnes.

Willcock hopes to have the deal completed and the player in question at training tomorrow night.

The manager was tightlipped on identity and position but did reveal he is currently with one of Reds’ main rivals in the early stages of the season.

“I actually tried to sign him during the summer when I was still at Ramsbottom and I think fans will be quite excited if we can get the deal over the line,” he said.

Willcock had previously said that there were a couple of options last week but neither “had been the right fit for the club.”

“I will not bring anyone to the club who is not going to improve the squad or fit into the dressing room. They have to be the right type for us,” he said.

Willcock has lost eight players during the first month of the season, mainly through injuries and for last night’s game with Ramsbottom that was down to five – but late-on goal-scorer Rowan Roache went down with a shoulder injury.

“Rowan’s got ligament damage to his shoulder. Nothing is broken or dislocated but it could mean four to six weeks out. Hopefully when the swelling has gone down it might be sooner,” said Willcock.
