Carlisle Crown Court

A controlling Whitehaven man who assaulted his ex-partner twice on the same day has been jailed for 15 months.

Carlisle Court Court heard of an extensive history of domestic violence perpetrated by 33-year-old Krys Ritson against his former girlfriend.

Ritson was jailed in January for a previous attack on the woman which involved stamping, punching and putting a pillow over his face.

He also received a restraining order prohibiting any contact with her for two years. But when Ritson was released from custody on licence, there was mutual contact between the pair.

And on June 22, Ritson verbally abused the woman in a pub before pushing her inside her home and throwing away her glasses, causing them to break.

Later, during another pub visit, he pushed her to stop her leaving.

Ritson, of the town’s Michael Street, was arrested and later admitted common assault, assault by beating and breaching the restraining order numerous times during June.

In an impact statement, the woman described Ritson as “controlling and very paranoid”.

“He was nice at first but then started hitting me,” she stated.

The woman was prescribed medication for Crohn’s disease but said: “He takes it, which causes me pain.”

She added: “Kris has ruined everything in my life and I wish I had never met him. I want to be left alone. I feel like he is not going to stop until I am dead.”

The court heard of Ritson’s past violence against ex-partners dating back to 2006.

Anthony Parkinson, defending, conceded Ritson would receive an immediate jail term. Mr Parkinson said the woman was also responsible for some problems in their relationship, and had made very recent contact.

The lawyer also said of Ritson: “He has lived a chaotic lifestyle through the abuse of drink and drugs.”
