Marathon man Gary McKee has announced his latest mammoth challenge – to run 365 marathons in 365 days.
Gary, from Cleator Moor, will start his epic endurance test on January 1 2022, and aims to run 365 consecutive marathons – more than 9,500 miles – to raise £1 million for Macmillan Cancer Support and Hospice at Home West Cumbria.
The 52-year-old, who has supported Macmillan for over 18 years, completed the London Marathon last week, as well as a gruelling 110 consecutive marathons for his two chosen charities earlier this year, raising an incredible £200,000.
Dad of three Gary, who has completed many extreme charity challenges over the years, is about to embark on his biggest and toughest to date.
Sue McDonald, Macmillan’s fundraising manager for Cumbria, said: “We’d like to thank Gary for his amazing commitment to raise funds for two causes close to his heart. This is an absolutely Herculean task to tackle but Gary has proven that he has the determination, and true Cumbrian grit, to complete whatever challenge he takes on. We wish him the very best of luck and will support him every step of the way.
“Nearly all (98 per cent) of Macmillan’s funding comes directly from donations, and it’s only through our fantastic fundraisers like Gary who help ensure Macmillan can continue to deliver the services that people living with cancer desperately need, now and in the future.”
Macmillan’s chief executive, Lynda Thomas, added: “Gary McKee has been a prolific fundraiser for Macmillan for almost 20 years; for which we can’t thank him enough. The money he raises helps us to fund vital cancer services and everyone at Macmillan wishes him the best of luck with his latest, craziest challenge to date.”
