A Cumbrian MP has paid tribute to a “lovely” colleague who died after a fatal stabbing.

Sir David Amess, who was a Conservative MP for more than 35 years, was fatally stabbed at a regular meeting with his Southend West constituents on Friday.

A 25-year-old man is currently being held under the Terrorism Act.

“Sir David Amess MP was a lovely man who worked so hard to represent his constituents’ best interests in his stalwart 38 years as an MP, which have now been tragically cut short in awful circumstances,” said Neil Hudson, Conservative MP for Penrith and the Border.

“My thoughts and prayers are very much with his family, friends and staff at this dreadful time. David was such a kind man who went out of his way to help everyone in any way he could. He was a proud champion of animal welfare, working in this area over his whole career.

“He was indeed a genuine and dedicated animal lover. As an MP, we are privy to all sorts of correspondence and interactions, some of it sadly can be abusive. I am very fortunate to be working with Cumbria Police who have provided security to both myself and my team and have contacted us quickly following the tragic events of the 15th.

“The police have been excellent and prompt to respond to any concerns we may have.”

When approached by Cumbria Crack, Barrow and Furness MP Simon Fell declined to comment at this time.
