The L&L Property Contractors Snooker League took another break for cup action this week with Workington Golf Club securing their second qualifying win in as many attempts.
They now look favourites to top Group One in the Gray’s Luxury Ice Cream sponsored Eric McMullen Memorial TKO handicap trophy.
In a 3-2 home victory against Workington’s Veteran Club the golfers didn’t have it all their own way however as Craig Davies (+27 handicap) took the first for the Vets.
A solid display by Lewis Tilley (+35) soon levelled the match score and as Phil Sorfleet (+16) defeated Vets captain Kevin Basnett (Scr), with some excellent potting in frame three, the golf club stood 2-1 to the good.
A victory for the Vets Club in frame four took the match to a decider with Mark Cowen (+14) facing Steve Garroway (+25) for the match win.
A disjointed start soon settled and as Cowen found his form the frame slowly slipped away from Garroway as the golf club cueist eventually took the frame and match in convincing fashion.
The only other match to feature this week took place in Group Two with Maryport Social producing an excellent 4-1 away win against Workington’s United Club.
A Ben Scott (+26) win in the first followed by an Andrew Sharp (+28) victory in the second put the travelling Social side in an excellent position at 2-0 up.
Another close frame win, this time from Andrew Scott (+32), put the Social in an unassailable position at 3-0, nevertheless Tony Hindmoor (+40) pulled one back in the next for what could be a vital United Club point.
The last frame of the match, however, proved to be the highlight of the night as Gary Miller (+35) continued in his rich vein form to sweep aside United captain Andrew Mitchelhill (+9) with a 42 break to boot.
