The former Workington Town and Wigan forward Stephen Holgate has died at the age of 49.
A very talented forward, Holgate had learnt the game in the amateur ranks with Hensingham where he was a BARLA international, before turning professional with Town in 1994.
It wasn’t long before he attracted the attention of high-flying Wigan Warriors and moved there in 1997, playing in the 1998 Super League Grand Final.
Injuries were to become a major problem, and after playing only 22 games he moved briefly to Hull FC and Halifax Blue Sox before having to retire from the game after limited time at the top.
He had been capped once for England during his time at Town and also made one appearance for Cumbria.
His former clubs all paid tribute this morning via Twitter, led by Town who said: “It’s with great sadness we learn of the passing of ex-player Stephen Holgate. An extraordinarily talented player who we are privileged to say graced Derwent Park.”
Wigan added: “Wigan Warriors are deeply saddened to hear of the news that Stephen Holgate has died aged 49.
“Holgate played 22 games for Wigan in 1998, including the Super League Grand Final.
“We send our deepest condolences to Stephen’s family and friends at this awful time.”
Whitehaven said: “It is with great sadness that the club have learned of the passing of local lad Stephen Holgate who represented his county, Wigan and our neighbours Workington Town as well as several other clubs.
“Our condolences go to his family and all concerned with Stephen. RIP.”
