Prop forward Andrew Dawson, who is in a select band of players to represent all three Cumbrian pro clubs, has re-signed for Whitehaven.
The hard-working Dawson – nickname ‘Bruie’ – has agreed a new two-year deal which will see the strong-running forward remain at the LEL Arena until the end of 2023.
The south Cumbrian, now aged 32, signed for the club ahead of last season after giving good service to both Barrow Raiders and Workington.
Dawson started his professional career with Barrow, making his debut for them in February 2012. In 2018 he moved up the coast to Workington Town on a two-year deal before joining Haven.
He played 174 games in his career at Barrow and Workington Town including two seasons at Championship level with the Craven Park club.
After signing the new deal Dawson said: “Last year was one of the most successful and enjoyable years of my career so I am happy to be here for another two years.
“I’m looking forward to the extra professionalism Jonty will bring to the side as well as some new exciting additions. Looking at the signings other clubs have made it looks like it’s going to be another tough year and I hope to, once again, play my part in a successful season.
“I want to give special mention to Charlo (Gary Charlton) for giving me the opportunity last season and I wish him well in his new role at the club.”
Head coach Jonty Gorley said: “It’s great to get Bruie on a multi-year deal. Same as some other players Bruie comes with vast Championship experience in a position – front row – where you need some experience.
“Bruie carries the ball really strongly and gets a fast play the ball for us to play. That’s also on the back of his leg drive and metres he makes after contact to get us on the front foot. He’s great to have in the squad for the next couple of years.”
Club director Ashley Kilpatrick said: “I think Bruie proved a lot of doubters last season wrong and he can easily play Championship rugby.
“He was good for us in his first season at the club. His go forward is second to none, always making yards with strong carries. He’s another lad we wanted signed up quickly as we knew there would be interest after the season Bruie had.”
