Peter Pan and Captain Hook are set to switch on the Christmas lights in Kirkby Lonsdale this weekend.
They will lead a community lantern procession as part of the event, on Friday.
Members of the public will be able to pick up a community made lantern from the monument in the square from 4pm on Friday 3rd December before watching the switch-on and processing through town.
Peter Pan and Hook will join Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band in leading the crowd down Main Street to St Mary’s Churchyard, where local carol singers will greet the public in a marquee.
Peter Pan and Hook turning on the Christmas lights are characters from the free community play called Peter’s Promise, a piece of Outdoor Winter Theatre based on Peter Pan and directed by freelance creative Jayne Davies.
The project has been funded by the Christopher Robin’s Trust and all donations will go to Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The community-made lanterns for the lantern-procession have been made by individuals and groups throughout November and December, organised by Janet Nuttall with a grant secured by Kirkby Lonsdale CIC from The Local Connections Fund (Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) and The National Lottery Community Fund). The lantern-making workshops were hugely successful as the community came together to make over 250 lanterns for the event.
Andi Chapple, town manager and organiser of the Christmas Fair, said “We are really excited for this event, especially because it is so community focused and we can really say this year that everyone has got involved. We’ve been blown away by the support from the community and we can’t wait to see the look on everyone’s faces when the town lights up!”
